Last week, I had an interaction that made me rethink who Enluma is for.
In what may have been my worst networking discussion yet, I met with a senior leader who is driving a large-scale healthcare transformation.
While I was introducing myself and my background, the leader was clearly not interested.
He quickly turned the discussion to himself and what he needed.
“I want my team to ….” or “I need to save $100 million dollars”.
Every sentence began with one letter “I”.
Never did he mention the team that reported to him or the broader organization he served.
Never did he say “we” or use the word “us”.
You would have thought he was the only person in the organization that mattered.
It became clear this was not someone Enluma could help.
With 5 minutes remaining, he said to me, “I think we’re done here”.
I couldn’t get off the call fast enough.
What this experience taught me, was who we are for, and who we are not for.
The first hint is the language a leader uses, especially the use of “I or Me” versus “Us or We”.
Leaders who consistently use “Us or We” are thinking about how they fit into the bigger picture. They are part of the organization.
On the other hand, leaders who heavily rely on “Me or I”, they are the most important character in their story.
And let’s be honest, they don’t give a shit about the people they have the opportunity to lead.
And this provided clarity.
Enluma is for leaders who give a shit.
About their people.
About getting better.
About the impact they leave behind.
These leaders see that developing their teams will transform performance and budgets. Achieving more with the people they already have.
Thinking back to the interaction I had last week. It showed me a leader we can’t help. He’s not a client.
And I’m ok with that.
Because there are many leaders out there who do give a shit.
And many of these leaders, don’t have a lot of time or large budgets, but they want to develop their teams.
That is where Enluma comes in.
