A few years ago, we surveyed over 400 professionals and asked a simple question: think of the most positive and productive workgroup you’ve ever been part of. What made it work?
90% of respondents said they’d experienced a group like that at least once in their career.
When we dug into what those groups actually did, four behaviors kept showing up, over and over, regardless of industry or role:
Team First — a “we before me” culture. The teams that thrived credited the collective, not any one person. One respondent put it simply: “We respected each other. More importantly, our manager respected us and would be ‘in the trenches’ with us.”
Accelerate — empowering people through communication and insight. Teams moved faster and made better decisions when information flowed freely instead of being held by a few people.
Elevate — growing and developing together. The best groups treated growth as a shared responsibility, not something that only happened in an annual review.
Realize — achieving a powerful destination. Every high-performing team we studied knew why the work mattered, not just what the work was.
One more finding stuck with us: when we asked who had the biggest impact on these positive experiences, peers ranked highest, then direct supervisors — senior leaders above that ranked lowest. The best team dynamics were being built from the ground up, not handed down from the top.
We built these four elements into a framework we now use with every leader we work with.
Which of these do you see teams and organizations struggle with the most?
